Audio-Book Listening Tips

Last updated on May 25, 2020

Now that I have been listening to audio-books for almost 2 years, here are some tips that might help you enjoy yours.

  • Be patient – If you are new to listening to audio-books, you might find it a bit hard to concentrate the first couple of times. Stick with it, and you will soon get the hang of it. If you are like me, you will want to stop reading and just listen to all books.
  • Be prepared to listen to a book multiple times – If you are listening to a book while commuting, or in a place where you can be sometimes distracted, you might miss a point or two. You can do a quick rewind and listen to what you just missed, or just move on, and listen to the book all over again when you are done. You will find that when you listen to interesting books a second or third time, you will notice and grasp many subtle things that you may have missed the first time.
  • Pick good quality audio-books – Audio-books can vary a great deal in the quality of recording, the clarity of the reader, expressions, tonal quality, etc. So it is important to get your audio-books from sources that are known for quality.
  • Be choosy about the topics and genre of books that you want to listen to – Not every kind of book or topic makes a good audio-book. Some books are better just read the old-fashioned way.
  • What is your “audio-book player”? – This can be an important choice that determines your overall experience with audio-books. If you choose to listen to them on your PC, then you are quite restricted to when you can listen to them. On the other hand, if you use your cell-phone, smartphone, an iPod or other portable player, your “listening productivity” and overall satisfaction is likely to be higher. This is because you can use your spare time or commute time more effectively when you listen to books on these portable devices. With a PC or a laptop, you are most likely going to be at your desk at home or work, and trying to listen to an audio-book in that setting doesn’t work well for a lot of people. In my case, I do most of my listening during my commute, and some while running errands.
